Pete Ambrose stands as our farmer extraordinaire! Since 1976, he's dedicated himself to plowing, planting, fertilizing, and nurturing his farm. His unwavering passion for supplying fresh food to the Lowcountry has anchored him in a way of life that many have been forced to let go, amidst the dominance of larger farms, corporate agriculture, labor issues, and of course, the most infamous, unrelenting, unreliable partner, Mother Nature.
Pete's roots are deeply intertwined with the earth, having grown up in rural Charleston where living off the land was second nature-James Island was the farming area back then. In his youth (1966), he found himself running a shrimp boat in Rockville, a steadfast occupation. However, as his family expanded, so did his desire to farm and forego the prolonged absences required by the shrimping industry. He still shrimps in his dreams at night but farms from his heart during the day. He compares himself to a chameleon because he is constantly adapting to the evolving times, needs, and preferences of both the community and successive generations. This adaptive spirit has led Farmer Pete to distribute his produce locally through various channels, including the Ambrose Family Farm CSA, Pick-your-own on the farm operation, the family's Stono Market and Tomato Shed Café on Main Road, Johns Island, as well as collaborating with quite a few prestigious local restaurants-Fig, SNOB, Malagon, Chez Nue, Vern's, The Ordinary, Wild Olive, Obstinate Daughter, Tomato Shed Cafe- just to mention a few!
Pete and his youngest son Sam and their loyal crew form a formidable force in their agricultural endeavor. Together, they manage to productively sustain the more than the 130-acre farm on Selkirk Plantation, Wadmalaw Island, yielding an abundance of delicious, wholesome, organically grown vegetables and berries for you and the Charleston community.
We offer a wide variety of fresh vegetables and some great berries and scuppernongs that are grown right on our farm. From juicy strawberries to crisp lettuce, our produce is picked daily to ensure maximum freshness and flavor.
